MY FRIEND GIVES BIRTH TO A SON

I touch him—

a life so fragile

it may melt

like light snow:

newborn baby.

My hands holding him

are large and coarse;

so soon after birth,

he is pure,

unsullied.

I hold him:

the gentle touch

of his hands

on my breast—

how sweet!

The world is so harsh

that I said no more babies;

my resolve

begins to

weaken.

Holding my friend’s child,

I yield for a while

to rapture—

a mother’s

emotions.

FATHER, MOTHER

Mother’s dear hands,

rough and tough

from tilling the fields:

tears well up

in my eyes.

Father and Mother

intent to distraction

on raising me:

I think of them

even now.

The hair

at her temples

already white:

I think of Mother,

and the tears spill down.

Parents worry about children;

children, about parents:

ah, this world in which

they must go

their separate ways.

I call them

Father, Mother, Brother, Sister,

yet they don’t know

the sorrows

of my life.
